We’re living in the age of Digital Transformation, taking the next step in our digital evolution and making strategic use of sophisticated digital capabilities to transform and optimize the processes associated with delivering business and consumer services.
First and foremost, the journey is one in which organizations strive for continuous optimization of the customer experience, and this is where data plays a crucial role!
Within data lies valuable patterns and sets of information that were previously buried because the amount of work required to extract them was overwhelming. However the so-called "Big Data" has become increasingly viable, as cost-effective approaches have emerged to tame the volume, velocity and variability of massive data.
Data-driven decision making is increasingly important
Organizations in today’s digital age must embrace a culture in which decisions cannot be made until this one question is answered: What does the data tell us?
Then the smart leader will also ask follow-up questions, such as: What is the origin of the data? What kind of analyses have been made? How certain are we of the results of the analytical exercises?
At Tensing, we support customers around their Digital Transformation, how to become data-driven and – even more important – the major contribution of location data in that journey to success. For me that's because I’m passionate about activating data to optimize results – not only in my work, but also in my personal life.
Digitalization makes life easier!
Know that I’m a technology geek both professionally and personally, and my house is a perfect example of how digitalization makes life easier but also on how digitalization causes a huge dependence on the immediate availability of data.
- The house has smart electric and gas meters that allow me to monitor energy consumption and there are solar panels on the roof that provide data about the energy they’re producing.
- The electric car is programmed to charge itself at the best appropriate time so as not to overload the electric network and still make use of the best possible electricity tariff.
- The thermostat and lighting system are part of the Internet of Things . This for instance helps the heating system to anticipate using my location and the weather forecast. The lighting system is capable to turn the lights on or off based, again based on my location.
But the other day, a digital malfunction in one of my devices occurred that made me realize we need a new way of describing our experiences in our always-on and always-connected digital age.
Digitalization leads to digital dependence!
I woke up early, put on my running shoes and noticed the battery of my Apple Watch was almost dead. You should know that every time I run, I record all the data: heart rate, average speed, interval speeds, total distance covered, my trajectory, and so on.
I seriously considered this inability to capture that data as being a great loss. I spent several minutes considering whether or not I even wanted to run. I thought, “What’s the point if I can’t record and analyze my performance? Maybe I should postpone my exercise until tomorrow?”
Do we all suffer from FOLOD?
I don’t know what happened exactly or how long it took, but after my initial hesitation, I had an “A HA!” moment and realized that what I experienced was Fear of Losing Out on Data (or FOLOD). Just to be clear, this is not about losing data that was captured in the first place; it’s the fear of not being able to capture all the data that you think you may need somewhere down the road.
Soon after my personal FOLOD experience, I realized that I see the same phenomenon in my professional life. There are organizations collecting huge amounts of data, filling up “data lakes” just because they believe they may need this data someday – without knowing if there will ever be a need for the data and without understanding how that data could positively affect their business and the delivery of services to their customers.
